Springbrook Adopts a Highway!



Coordinator SHS senior Nathan Einstein with advisor Ed Wexler and crew members (Lanai O'Flahavan, Sharif Kronemer, Stephen Feister, Sari Weiser & Lynda Johnson) completed the 1st SHS Adopt-A-Highway cleanup this past Sunday. The notorious 6 minute video was watched...vests and hats puton...and much trash collected.The section of highway adopted by Springbrook (and yes, a sign will come eventually), goes from Valleybrook Drive, past White Oak Middle School, White Oak library and up to Route 29.The crew found a lot of strange debris, but worked with good humor through it all.Nathan Einstein and Ed Wexler plan to hold one more cleanup this spring to adhere to the requirements of adopting a section of the highway.

Dr. Elsie Scott from the CBC Speaks at Springbrook


Dr. Elsie L. Scott, President and CEO of The Congressional Black Caucus visited Springbrook on February 21st to speak with groups of students. In the photo above, she is standing with Officer Rodney Barnes, Springbrook's EFO and organizer of the event.

Job/Internship Fair is a Success!




On Wednesday, February 20th, Springbrook held a special job fair for students. Students registered to attend the event in advance. They were "dressed to impress" and brought resumes to present to prospective employers. Companies who participated were Montgomery County Department of Recreation, Montgomery County Office of Human Resources, Walter Reed Army Research Lab, Safeway, DAR Cars, Arts on the Block, Exploring Learning for Life, Pizza Hut, Girl Scouts National Capital, National Park Service, Riderwood and Starbucks. A special thanks goes to Mrs. Nicole Brown and Sheri Lowe for organizing this activity.

Springbrook Holds Scholarship Tea

On Tuesday, February 19, 2008, Springbrook High School held its first Scholarship Tea in the Career Center. Representatives hosting scholarship opportunities were on hand during lunches and after school to encourage students to take advantage of the financial awards. Scholarships ranged form $100 to $10,000. Refreshments were provided by the guidance department and the PTSA. Ms. Tammy Patterson, Career Center Counselor, is planning another event in the near future.

Denise Rolark-Barnes Shares Words of Wisdom

Mrs. Denise Rolark Barnes was a guest speaker on February 6th. She is the owner/editor of the Washington Informer news paper, and hosts both the Reporters Round Table on DC Cable, and the Washington Informer Spelling Bee as seen on NBC4. The Informer is an award winning news paper that reports positive news in the Washington DC area. Her father, the late Calvin Rorlark founced the paper over 40 years ago.

Mrs. Aisha Karimah From NBC 4 Speaks with Students

On February 13th, Mrs. Aisha Karimah, Director of Community Affairs for NBC4 Washington D.C. visited Springbrook to speak with students. Mrs. Karimah is the producer for NBC4's, Health And Fitness Expo. She also works with the Washington Informer Spelling Bee, MS Walk, Community Shred It, Hispanic Essay Contest, Food For Families, Share The Warmth, Black Family Reunion, and The Race 4 The Cure, just to name a few.

Malcolm Clyburn Receives Honor

Junior, Malcolm Clyburn has been honored for his exemplary volunteer service with a President's Volunteer Service Award. This award, presented by the Prudential Sprit of Community Awards program on behalf of the President's Council on Service and Participation, goes to students who show an enormous capacity for giving and reaching out to those in need.

Special Visitors to U. S. History Classes

Wednesday, February 13th and Thursday, February 14th, US History students will have an opportunity to hear from two different sets of guest speakers.
Wednesday, Mr Alfred Bailey and others from the Tuskegee Airmen will be presenting about the experiences of African Americans during WW II before the US military become integrated.
Thursday, Terry Shima, Mary Murakami, Joe Ichiuji and Grant Hirabayashi will be sharing about the experiences of Japanese Americans during the war, including the internment, serving in the European War, etc.
We are honored to have these people come and share with us.
This special visit was organized by Mr. Pim in the social studies department.

Springbrook Students Visit the Embassy of Saudi Arabia

Dr. Mona Hamdy of the math and foreign language departments, took a group of students from her Arabic class to the embassy. They were introduced to customs and culture of the Middle East.

Advanced Placement Records Set in 2007


Springbrook High School students attend Sharon Cohen’s Advanced Placement World History class. MCPS students set records in 2007 for number of AP exams taken and for students earning a 3 or higher, with both African American and Latino students posting dramatic gains. Since 1999, the school system has focused intensively on providing students with more opportunities to take and succeed in challenging AP courses.

Upcoming Events in the Music Department

Wednesday, March 5, 2008, The "Presidents Own" United States Marine Band Jazz Combo will perform at SHS for music students. This will be a performance clinic and lecture. It is a free concert. Saturday, March 8, 2008, is the 7th Annual Swing Into Spring Benefit Dinner Dance at SHS. This annual event is held to raise money for scholarships, instruments, equipment, music and other related needs for the Instrumental Music Department.

Foreign Language Dept. Wins a $10,000 Grant!

Ms. Karen Willetts and Springbrook’s Foreign Language Department won a $10,000 grant from the National Foreign Language Center of the University of Maryland’s STARTALK project. A proposal was submitted to hold an “Arabic Summer Institute: An Introduction to the Arabic Language and Cultures.” Congratulations for a job well-done!
