Law Students Visit with Corporate Lawyers

On Thursday, March 22, 2007, Springbrook students from Mr. Frace’s law class traveled to Discovery Channel headquarters in Silver Spring, as the guests of Discovery’s corporate law department. At Discovery, students participated in a mock contract negotiation for a reality show being pitched to Discovery programmers. The students haggled over issues such as who owned the rights to the title song and whether clips from the show could be distributed over the internet. Later in the day, the students followed up with a mediation session when the show became a hit and the parties wanted to renegotiate. The field trip marked the culmination of the first year of a partnership between Discovery and Springbrook to encourage students’ interest in law-related careers. Street Law Inc., a leader in law related education, provided guidance to Discovery and Springbrook as this partnership was initiated and developed throughout the year.

Book Drive for Students in Cambodia

The Students Against Landmines Association, SALA, at Springbrook High school completed a book drive for Cambodian students. Before the Thanksgiving Break this active association held a pizza fundraiser to finance the shipping fees to send books to California, where the Teachers Without Borders organization would further ship the books to Cambodia. Teachers Without Borders is planning to send the books to Cambodia to help unfortunate Cambodian children improve literacy and receive opportunities for higher education. But little did we know, the success of this project would by far outweigh the profits of the simple fundraiser. With donations from many teachers like Mr. Foster, Mrs. Spoales, and Mrs. Willetts, SALA was able to collect over 700 books within a week’s time for this valuable cause. The Students Against Landmines Association would like to thank everyone who was able to help.

Special Visit from a Former Student

Springbrook High School Alumni, Christie Glascoe Crowder (Class of
90) shares her college experience with all young ladies in her debutrelease “Your Big Sister’s Guide to Surviving College”.

“I remember what it was like having to learn the ‘hard
way’ about life on campus and life in general. For many
girls, going away to college is literally a crash course on
becoming a woman and being completely responsible for
yourself. My goal is to ‘soften the blow’ a bit and help
young ladies learn life’s lessons armed with common
sense and a little big sister wisdom.”

Christie brings her insightful and inspirational message to Springbrook
with her book and her Know Before You Go college preparation workshop.
Here is your chance to meet her and learn all you ever wanted to know
about life on a college campus!
